What is ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha is a herbal remedy that has been used for thousands of years to promote overall health and wellbeing. Despite taking its roots in traditional Indian medicine, modern-day clinical research has since confirmed ashwagandha's therapeutic potential.
How long does ashwagandha take to work?
Ashwagandha can take anywhere from 2 days to several weeks to work. Current research suggests it takes up to ten weeks to experience maximum benefits related to stress and anxiety reduction. Regular and consistent use is typically needed to experience the full range of benefits associated with ashwagandha.
What are the health benefits of ashwagandha?
Reducing stress and anxiety: Ashwagandha has been shown to help the body adapt to, and resist, mental and physical stress. It is believed to work by regulating the activity of stress-related hormones, such as cortisol, and by restoring balance to the nervous system.
Improving sleep: By regulating hormone levels, ashwagandha can help improve sleep patterns and enhance the restorative effects of sleep. In fact, ashwagandha’s Latin species name – somnifera – means "sleep-inducing".
Supporting the immune system: Ashwagandha has been shown to have immune-boosting properties, and enhance the activity of immune cells and improve the body's ability to fight off infections and diseases.
Supporting cognitive function: Some studies have shown that ashwagandha helps improve memory, focus, attention, and general cognitive function by promoting the growth and survival of nerve cells in the brain.
Boosting physical strength and recovery: Studies have shown that ashwagandha can help improve muscle mass, strength, and endurance in some individuals.
Improving energy and endurance: Ashwagandha may help improve physical performance and reduce fatigue by increasing the availability of energy-producing molecules in the body.
Balancing hormones: Ashwagandha has been shown to help regulate the activity of hormones involved in various functions, including stress, metabolism, and reproductive health.
Weight loss: Ashwagandha may have a modest effect on weight loss. Some studies have shown that ashwagandha may help reduce body weight and body fat, and improve metabolic health.
Other therapeutic effects: In addition to those listed above, ashwagandha has demonstrated a host of other health benefits. This includes anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, improved sexual function in women, reduced blood sugar, fat, and risk of type 2 diabetes, and improved cardiovascular health.
It is important to note that while ashwagandha has been traditionally used for these purposes, more research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms of action and determine its efficacy in various populations.
Is ashwagandha safe?
Ashwagandha is considered safe for most people when taken in recommended doses, but please consider the following cautionary statements:
- Taking excess doses of ashwagandha should be avoided as this can lead to digestive upset, diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting.
- Pregnant women should avoid using ashwagandha.
- Ashwagandha can interact with certain medications and may cause side effects in some people, so it's important to consult your doctor before taking this herb.
I've heard ashwagandha can numb your emotions. Is this true?
Anecdotally, some individuals have reported that using ashwagandha over an extended period of time can have a numbing effect their emotions. While this claim has not been documented in any of the scientific literature, if you experience this, or any other, adverse effect, stop taking ashwagandha immediately.
How does ashwagandha work?
The biologically active components of ashwagnahda are withanolides, alkaloids, steroidal lactones, and saponins. The exact mechanisms by which ashwagandha works are not well understood, but its active components are thought to interact with various biological systems and pathways to produce its therapeutic effects. Our product contains 5% concentration of withanolides, making it among the highest concentration, most bioavailable ashwagandha extracts on the market.
